Here on the East End, we are not immune to maternal and infant death.

This map depicts the Infant death rates from 2011-2013 in Suffolk County, published in the Suffolk County Community Health Assessment of 2014-2017

With the new merger of Southampton and Stony Brook Hospitals, we are working for improvements in both access and options for maternal healthcare.  Some areas we are focusing on:

  1.  Bringing providers with privileges from Stony Brook University Hospital to Southampton Stony Brook, specifically the Stony Brook Midwifery practice.
  2.  Legalization of Certified Professional Midwives (CPM) to provide more options for care, proven to be safe, effective and economical. Read EEBN Board Member, Gayle Eckey’s presentation on legalization of CPMs.
  3.  Securing insurance coverage for Doula services.
  4.  Budget/funds for Postpartum services.
  5.  Establishing a Community Center for People of Childbearing Years, including ‘Baby Box’ distributions, and Postpartum Newborn Visits.
  6.  Creating a Maternal/Infant Morbidity and Maternal Review Board.  This would provide needed data to direct choices in care and services.
  7. Sponsoring an Informational Meeting for the public on the East End on Women’s Health with a focus in Maternal and Fetal outcomes.

What we’ve done so far:

April 2018: We met with New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele.

After our meeting he introduced Assembly resolution K. 1176, memorializing  the United States Congress to pass and the President to sign the  “Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2017” (H.R. 1318).
